Hi All,

I've planted a good number of fruit trees so far this year and I wanted some suggestions on to what to plant around them. I've established some marigolds already, but what else? I have planted 5 apple trees, 2 pear, 2 cherry, 1 plum and 1 peach. I can name them, if that's relevant. I've read on here that garlic is good to have around apple trees, so I may look into that. My plum tree has a bunch of beautiful chives growing around it already. I'm looking for, in order a; stuff that complements and helps each other, b; usefulness (for instance we use a lot of garlic) and c; aesthetics. Any suggestions? Similarly, and since I am already typing any thoughts on what goes well with blueberry bushes and strawberry patches?

I live in Rhode Island. Great backyard that maintains moisture very well and gets good sunlight. We are bordered and surrounded by huge Norwegian Maple trees.

Thanks for the help.

Take a look at this thread and do a search for "permies fruit tree guild."

I like the following around/near my fruit trees.
Onion family: onion, garlic, leek, chives, etc
Carrot family: cilantro, dill, fennel, water celery, etc
Cabbage family: nasturtirun, daikon radish, kale, etc
Legume family: dutch clover, goumi, beans
Mint family: oregano, thyme, etc

I also like currants/gooseberry and blackberry/raspberry. Maybe some arctic/hardy kiwi in those Maple trees or on a fence.
