I’m helping the current steward of a historic rural property in southwestern Nova Scotia explore what its next chapter might look like, beginning with one good residency relationship.
The place is called Abijah’s Mill.
A brook runs through the property. There is an 1840s farmhouse, an old mill, barns, forest, meadow, orchard trees, trails, and nearly 50 acres of land in the Municipality of Clare. For a long time, much of the property has been quiet. The intention now is to begin simply: with the place as it is, people who feel genuinely drawn to it, and enough time to discover what fits.
The immediate opportunity
The farmhouse is currently the most practical place to begin. It is a three-bedroom, one-bath rural home with electric heat, a wood stove, and fiber internet. It is comfortable and inhabited, with the character, quirks, history, and unfinished edges that come with an old rural property. We’re interested in hearing from an individual, couple, or small household who might want to stay long enough to settle in, experience the place through the seasons, and see whether a longer relationship develops naturally.
Life there could take many forms
Someone might simply want a quieter place to live and work remotely. Someone else might be drawn to gardening, food production, animals, forestry, woodworking, restoration, writing, art, teaching, building, or creating a small independent livelihood. There is considerable room for interests and projects to emerge over time. The first question is smaller:
Can one good residency relationship take root?
Can someone live there, support themselves, enjoy the place, communicate well, respect the property and the people around them, and begin to feel at home? That first experience can help reveal what makes sense next.
About the land
The property includes mostly forest, meadow, a year-round brook, orchard areas, old agricultural and mill infrastructure, and several buildings in different stages of use and restoration. Life there includes the ordinary realities of rural Nova Scotia: winter, insects, mud, old structures, maintenance, changing seasons, and some distance from urban conveniences. It also offers water, quiet, space, history, fiber internet, and a great deal of unrealized potential.
