David Montgomery will be discussing his book Dirt: the erosion of civilizations at the Edmonds Community College's Blackbox theater at 12:30 today (April 28th).

It was a great lecture and really laid out the information about how our soils are being eroded at an alarming rate. He also showed historic information regarding different civilizations (the presentation focused on the ancient greeks), once plow based agriculture was introduced, began a cycle of rise and collapse as they destroyed their soils.

While not anything new to anyone who's been following the debate about till vs. no-till and such, it was very interesting to see the hard numbers as to the different kinds of agricultural systems and their impact on soil erosion (no mention of permaculture, but no-till and sustainable farming were both talked about)

I'm certainly bumping Dirt up to next in my list of "stuff I have to read!"
