- A Stanford Engineering team has built a working radio the size of an Ant, and is so energy efficient that it gathers all the power it needs from the electromagnetic
waves that carry signals to its Receiving Antenna

phys.org/news/2014-09-aims-world-ant-sized-radios.html#nwit

I do expect that the range that it can receive from will be short, unless connected to a Wi-fi network, but expecting it to have a broadcast range beyond a few yards
is unlikely ! Big AL

Name ONE THING. ONE.. I dare you. Name one thing we use in our daily lives that came from a university ?? Came from 'out standing research from XX university"....the answer usually is: not one damn thing. Universities are only there to publish papers, sometimes get patents that will never be licensed and the big reasons they do this is to write grants so they can get more money to do more stuff to write more grants to write more papers to get more money. NEVER do they do anything that will actually become famous and impact your life... so... don't expect the ant sized radio, or anything else from any university or 'published paper' any decade soon.

Steve

p.s. I asked this same question of one guy and he had the perfect answer... when asked to name one damn thing a university has ever produced his immediate answer was, "Fast food workers." ..... that about sums it up.

AGAIN... NOT ONE F'N thing in production, not one product and especially not one famous product at all. The long article is just about the licensing fight between the student and the university. Useless !!!

Steve Harris : Did you reed the same article I did ? Money Talks ,the little man walks !

Orphan drugs , I am alive today because of medical research done at the University level after private industry decided that they were not only going
to cancel an existing research program, they were going to stop production of a an existing drug line .

MOST of the drug research today cannot be un-coupled from University medical centers ! Big AL !

Quoting directly from the New York Times article previously posted to this thread !

[u]Colleges and universities obtained fewer than 250 patents a year before 1980[u], when the
Bayh-Doyle Act gave them ownership of inventions developed through federally financed
research. Now they acquire about 3,000 a year, according to the Association of University
Technology Managers, whose members work in tech transfer offices. in 2006 association
members made $45 Billion from Licensing fees and equity in spinoff companies; research
powerhouses like Stanford and new York University made $61million and 157 million,
respectively.

To ask what Inventions have come out of any college or university -is to ask a question that became both Moot and Dated in 1980 !

For the good of the crafts ! Big AL

How about Google search engine?
Used daily by millions of people world-wide.
Used by more people than all other search engines combined.

It was the results of a research project by Larry Page at Stanford University. Sergey Brin joined the project, and they later founded Google. To this day, Stanford still holds some of the patented material, but has granted Brin & Page exclusive rights to use it.

Google's first URL was google.stanford.edu
