I got it wrong, sloppy thinking, not considering first principles. We are trying to lift water using a pivot beam. Lifting a 5g bucket by pumping water to repeatedly fill and empty a 50g drum. Yes it works but not well. 5g per 2 mins (a 2000gph pump takes at least 2 mins to fill a 50g drum). I was using a VARIABLE WEIGHT approach. I failed to consider that a PIVOT BEAM has both mass and moment. I just varierd the mass, not the moment - ie the location of the force. Clearly the greatest leverage of a BALANCE beam is the position of weight not the amount of weight.

Same objective - slightly different strategy. NOW Pivot is set up so that the DEFAULT position is the 5g bucket is high in the air on the long end of the beam, meaning that there is a bunch of fixed weight at the short end. Instead of changing the weight we simply introduce a MOVEABLE weight. Something that rolls is good - how about a 10lb wight lifting bar. Beginning at the pivot point it only needs to roll a short distance towards the long end (up the incline) to change the balance point. When the 5g bucket hits the pond it fills with water instantly (rubber flap in the bottom of the bucket). A SMALL MOTOR (12v dc solar powered) then operates a rope system perhaps with a simple pulley) to bring the seight back to just a little bit on the short side of the pivot point. The 5g bucket is lifted - it could be lifted almost any height, 20 feet easily with a 15' beam setup. Yes, the pivot point is elevated.

How much lifted how far - it depends. 20 secs per cycle, 5gallons per lift, 25' beam, elevated pivot position (say 10') Elevation of 35' is possible. 5g x 3 times per minute x 60 minutes = 900 gph. = 5000 gallons per day = especially in the summer. A motor like this should last a long time - perhaps it can be direct connected to a solar cell. Stops working when there is not enough voltage.

I'm not smart enough to know how to set up a small motor on a timed basis to be able operate both forward and reverse on a timed basis however I have a feeling it would be pretty simple for an electronics dude. Maybe arduino - a 555 timer chip ... a simple circuit? Could a starter motor do this? With a simple pulley applying mechanical advantage, the force needed would be much less than the 10lb deadweight.
I'm sure there are a bunch of smart people on this forum that would sort this out quick smart. Please share your ideas.
