On a ram pump, I know the drive line needs to be either metal or schedule 40 for rigidity, but the line that carries the water uphill - can you go cheap there with hose, black plastic supply line, or must I go pvc? I'll probably be traveling 250 or 300 feet lengthwise and 25 to 30 feet in elevation.

Thanks

For that you can use whatever you want, now if it for drinking water you better use something other than a garden hose. Then you have to think about is it going to stay out there all winter, will you bury it , is it going to sit in the sun. There is a pipe for all occasions.

just be sure that the connection at the ram is strong,at that location is the weakest point of the up hill run
it has to get 300' of water head pressure moving
if you use black pipe or pex,use brass fittings and double clamp them [warming the fitting helps too]

I didnt think about using brass there. I kinda figured that with soft piping it wouldnt be any different with the plastic fitting. might be rethinking that, though. thanks. I've got my little dam built, and probably going to set up some cement blocks in the creek to anchor the ram pump to today and maybe run part of the supply line today. we shall see with the rain.

I've got no option but to sell you all for scientific experiments. Or a tiny ad:
