book suggestions? on growing a forest

Im looking at buying some prairie land and converting part of it to forest. The idea of Forest Garden is super great, but first and foremost, how do you GROW a forest from scratch? I read the thread about Akira Miyawaki, and find his work facinating (growing a forest in 10 years). I was thinking about buying his book "The Healing Power of Forests: The Philosophy Behind Restoring Earth's Balance With Native Trees" but looks to be (from the cover, and there are no reviews) more philosophical than practical.
So, do any of y'all have suggestions on where to start and how to start a Forest (or Forest Garden) from zero?

The botanist James Swan wrote some on this subject in regards to the pacific plains of my state around 1850. Rhododendrons seemed to thrive.

Here's a thread with links to two of his books. I'm afraid most of it is about climax forests and clean waterways. It's all opposite. I think he experienced something like crossing Konstantinopolus the wrong way after an outbreak of plague.
