what to plant in july?

am fencing in an area for chickens and want to throw some seed mix out and see what comes up. Not concerned with yield, not going to spend much time prepping the soil but this is a low mowed grassy area right now, can mow it tight before I do this if that would help. Could either go with something the chickens might enjoy, or could go with veggies or something for the family that the chickens wont have any interest in. Also don't want to invest a bunch of money in seed, so looking for something commonly cheaply available. What would you do? buckwheat, amaranth, quinoa, cukes, beets, turnips, radishes, broccoli, bush beans?

Wisconsin Zone 5 I believe, mid july, full sun briefly but mostly shade.

You can plant anything, it just might not come to fruitation. I threw out a TON of seeds on my berms last year in July. I had a lot of really big greens, huge turnips, beets and radishes. But if I were hoping for seed it didn't happen as they didn't have long enough to do that. But they all grew great and the chickens loved them. Come August you can throw out some more of the fall crops.

I think you are right, low growing, root veggies with lots of massive green tops. I want to build the soil in that area anyway and getting some organic matter there to decompose is a good idea. gonna have to grab some seeds next time I am out.
