hello I am thinking of moving down there. would like your ideas on where it is best. I want country living and I will drive half hour or so to work. I am looking for good real estate as I will be digging into that. It doesn't matter about schools because I don't have young kids, I am looking for a nice friendly and dog friendly community. I have been hearing about parts of north Carolina. but I think Tennessee would be better. thank you for your info.

Howdy Tami welcome to permies!

I have added your post to the appalachia forum to see if anyone in Tennessee has any advise for you.

In the mean time is there any certain part of the state that you are looking at? Already have a job ? Anything else you might be looking for that would help?

A road trip answers many questions. When I first moved to BC, I stopped in several places that where too hot, dry and isolated. Then I searched Vancouver Island and stayed.

Property values vs quality of community and land has to be considered. Often, when land is very cheap, there is a very good reason. Sometimes value is low due to problems that can be fixed. Other times, there are insurmountable obstacles. A road trip will answer many questions.

You might consider east Tennessee. I've been in Knoxville for a couple of years now. The gardening is great and there are some decent stores and free manure around. Composting happens quickly, too. Commuting half an hour from a country-type setting is probably possible, assuming you find the right place and avoid the western suburbs. Friendly, generally yes; dog friendly, very much so. Lower taxes than NC. East Tennessee is still recovering from decades of economic problems but at least Knoxville is improving pretty quickly.

Another east Tennessee possibility would be Maryville, a bit smaller and not too far from here.
