Sandy Bar Ranch is offering an internship in 2011 for a person seeking to gain skills in natural building. Internship starts with a 1-week workshop early in the season with natural builder/ designer/ author
Michael G Smith, covering the principles of natural building design and specific construction techniques. Lectures and discussions will cover passive solar and basic design principles for energy efficient, compact natural homes. Intern will then gain hands-on experience building a structure using straw bale, earth bags, light straw clay earthen floors and earthen plasters. Internship is 32 hours/ week in exchange for room & board and a small stipend. In addition to natural building, intern will participate in most ranch activities including gardening, animal care, brush clearing, cabin and grounds maintenance and food preservation.
Sandy Bar Ranch is diversified Permaculture site on the Klamath River in Northern California with many existing examples of natural building including cob, light straw clay, wattle and daub, living roof, round pole construction and a variety of natural plasters. In addition to natural building interns help with all aspects of our Homestead and cabin business.
