So our nursery salvage company has an opportunity to salvage some lilacs. A client is going to pay to have a line of lilacs removed, because they are being shaded by a tree and helping to shade their grass.

So, we will already be paid. We have to dig the plants out all the way, because the client does not want them coming back, and we don't use herbicide. Is it worth potting up smaller sections, with the tops cut back to ground level, in 5 gallon containers and then trying to sell them for a few dollars a piece? Or would it be better to just salvage cuttings? It is not quite the right time of year for greenwood cuttings. Or should we just throw them out?

Are second hand shrubs in general worth it?

I will save at least one; another client would love a lilac bush.

Lilacs are a popular classic shrub, and it seems like they would be worth salvaging. What facilities do you have for the plants? If you own ground, you could plant one of each variety as a mother plant, and keep on taking new plants off it, both green cuttings and the ones that come up from the roots (suckering).

For the ones you will be removing dividing and potting, pot them up and put them in a protected place. It would be interesting to see what survival rate you'll get when you dig them up this time of year. If it were me I would use an anti-shock solution or preparation. (my favorite being "super thrive").

Looks like you're in business! Good luck!
