I haven't watched Hunter X Hunter yet (it's on an ever-growing list of "when I have the time"), but the rec reminded me of another anime that I really liked: Silver Spoon. Besides being a high school slice of life/ coming of age thing, it's about an agricultural high school in Hokkaido. It's not super educational, but it's informative in its own way about the current state and practice of conventional farming in Japan and a bit about the challenges Japanese farmers are facing with industrialization. I also learned that you shouldn't start making cheese if you've had natto for breakfast because the possibility for cross-contamination is that high (though I don't know of that's real, superstition, or a TV "fact;" still interesting if true). It's good for adults, but I think it would really open some young minds in the 12-18 demographic. I watched the sub on Crunchyroll and found the raw of the live-action movie on (I think) kissanime.
