mega hugel! first attempt

Last fall we had to take out some large, dead trees in the pasture and rather than burn or chip we opted to start a hugel bed...a really big one!

Unfortunately, my busy season kicked in sooner than expected and we were forced to abandon the project because laying in all the topsoil was going to take too long. At worst, I figured we were creating more habitat for the local critters (which was confirmed just a few weeks later when a family of quail moved in).

This year I'm planning on filling in the air gaps with local equine provided biomass.

In the podcasts Paul always sounds really excited when he talks about Sepp's massive hugel beds so I thought you all might get a kick out of this.

Horse in foreground for perspective and attribution purposes, as she will be a key contributor to the process.
