Peace community.   I am looking to relocate my very unique family of 5 from Seattle (self labeled the hub of open minded thinkers) to somewhere in Washington where we can purchase an acreage and start on the path towards self sufficiency.   My husband is from Gambia, West Africa (also known as little Jamaica) and I am from rural Nebraska, we are muslim. I have christian roots and we are open minded to all people, religions, and lifestyles. We have three children, each with a different color skin, and our youngest has an extra set of chromosomes aka Downs Syndrome.   We do exports to Africa and do promotion, production, dj, and concerts in the reggae/world music scene, my professional career prior to being a full time mom was non-profit, business management, and education/childcare.    We are looking for at least 5 acres(the more the better) with a minimum of a well.   We want to have a good amount of chickens and  sheep, a food forest, and eventually a whole communal compound but realize we will have to WORK up to our grand vision.  We are interested in many different types of alternative housing/building but would settle for a mobile, stick built, anything that is on the right piece of land.   Our main difficulty is looking for the right property with Owner financing terms.  Given we will still have occasional business and family in Seattle we would prefer something on the west side but the right place is key.   My search keeps taking me to Ferry county because there are more owner financed homes with large acres.  This week we are looking at homes in Newport, Coleville, Republic, Rice, and Randle.   We have seriously considered Skagit county, and the Olympic Peninsula.   We will go anywhere for the right land and community.  Does anyone love their community? Why?  Do you know somewhere a family like ours would be welcomed or even unwelcome?   Do you know anything about any of the areas we are looking in now?   Do you know of a property in Washington with owner terms?  Appreciate your responses!

Ferry county is a nice area, I looked a lot there as well as in Okanogan county where I finally got land.

Tonasket area has a summer solstice festival and a barter fair in the fall with a bunch of reggae and other music. http://www.okanoganfamilyfaire.net/ So you might want to check that out.

Skagit county is also nice. I grew up in Bellingham in Whatcom county but visited Skagit a lot and had a lot of friends from there. There is a nice reggae festival held between Arlington and Darrington. I did trail maintenance in the Darrington area, and I really like the forests in that area.

For Eastern WA I did a lot of looking on http://www.desertlakerealty.com/ but also came across plenty of Western WA land and I think I remember them having a owner finance option in the search function.

Thank you Devin.   I appreciate your input!   We keep hearing that Okanogan could be a good place for us...just haven't found the right property out there yet but we are driving east on Monday so maybe we will check it out!

Something to consider in favor of Ferry county, is through their PUD they have an off grid program where they will install a solar and wind system for you and you pay them a monthly fee to slowly pay it off. Once paid off the system is yours out right.

Tell me how it all turns out. Here is a tiny ad:
