I've been playing with aquaponics for a couple years. I get lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and chives from my aquaponics bed. This last year weather has been the big ugly, unseasonably damp and cool. I started seedlings indoors and two days after transferring them to my outdoor bed we had pea sized hail which hammered everything flat.
My goal is to give the weather the finger (BOTH hands) and switch to indoor aquaponics for growing salad greens, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers for as much of the year as I can. To do that, some of the growing will have to be done vertically.
I have a plant wall in our living room that keeps my husband's fish tank clean and healthy (
http://norisstuff.com/aquaponics/plant-walls-gardening-and-the-science-of-aquaponics/) and saves me from having to water many many potted plants (I LOVE house plants, just get bored having to water all the time).
Using the same technology (pretty simple stuff using a programmable timer and flooring felt) I want to grow my lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in a wall and root veges in the beds.
I'll be using Travis Hughley's barrelponics system for the beds. It's the same system I've been using outside.
I'm tying together rocket mass heater warming for our recycled thermopane panel sun porch with the aquaponics. It should be interesting!
