Has anyone grown onions and potatoes together? How did it work out?
This is my first year growing potatoes, and I couldn't resist the onion starts at the farm co-op (they were 100 for only $2.99!). I didn't know where to put that many, so I thought to plant them in my potatoes. I'll be posting my progress as the growing season goes on, but I'd love any input as to what I can/could do better.
Below is a picture of the garden bed. It's about 10 feet long and a little over 2 feet wide. I planted 18 Yukon Gold, 3 Purple Majesty, and 3 red potatoes (forgot to write down the variety). They're in two rows, spaced 10-12 inches apart. To plant the potatoes, I dug two trenches about 3-4 inches deep, panted the potatoes, covered with the displaced soil. Then, in a row between the two potatoes rows, I placed red onion starts, 8-10 inches apart on TOP of the soil. I then covered everything with about 2-3 inches of duck bedding. As the season progresses, I plan on heaping on more duck bedding, leaf mulch, grass clippings and (if I get any) tree trimmings from the power company. I'm thinking of placing most of the mulch on top of the potatoes, making the potato/onion bed look concave. The method of planting is inspired by
Dale's Three Day Garden and
Back to Eden's method of planting potatoes
Any experience or input would be much appreciated!
Below is a picture of the potato/onion bed. It runs SE to NW, and the contour of the land down to NW. It's fenced to keep out my chicken & ducks!
