Can anyone tell me...
If I use potassium chloride in our water softener instead of salt, could I then use the gray water in the garden?

We live in the AZ desert and our water is so  horrible that we really do need the water softener, but the more I think about it, the less I like seeing all that perfectly good water go down the drain.  It just occurred to me today that maybe we could use the gray water if we changed from salt to potassium chloride. I use soapnuts in the laundry, so that would help.

Does anyone know?

Looks like potassium chloride is a common fertilizer but may inhibit the germination of some seeds.  So maybe use the greywater on established plants but not on seeds.

I had some links to share with you but I lost them.    Try googling "potassium chloride and plant growth" or something like that....

Thanks, Ludi. I'll do a search. It would be great if I could just funnel it out to the trees. I could just move the hose with each laundry load. We have a jet tub that I almost never use because it takes SO much water to fill the tub. I could ease my aching back a lot more often if I didn't have to feel guilty about wasting the water!

I was very excited today when I realized that perhaps I could use gray water even with a water softener. I'd given up on the possibility. What is really funny is that my husband, who wouldn't even consider it just a few months ago, says that he is willing if the cost isn't prohibitive. Guess all my permie talk is having an affect!
