Most of our yard is crab grass now (the viney kind)  any tips on how to deal with this and get real grass to grow

Get a thick turf!  A thick turf that is watered infrequently easily beats out annuals.

Mow high, water infrequently, fertilize at the beginning of spring and fall.  That's about it!
