It looks as though the tar creek superfund site finally gets its very own plan! passive water treatment referred to on the news this morning is being called ecological engineering and plans to use ponds to slowly filter the water before it reaches the main waterways. The area is toxic due to mining of zinc and lead in the past. Poor Picher, a town located within the site has been going through heck with the government trying to buy them out. This spring a tornado wiped out 75% of the remaining homes. That actually helped speed the process along some. The town is surrounded by giant chat hills that blow toxic dust through town, the ground water is contanimated. Large carverns open/collapse in peoples yards and under roads when located over old mines. This area has been a disgrace and I'm so happy to see it finally getting cleaned up.
