We have native grass with similar growth characteristics and alway end up having to dig it out, roots, runners and all. We just started a new experiment of thoroughly clearing a bed and then burying aliminum roof flashing in a trench surrounding the bed. We're basically treating it like miniature bamboo at this point. By this time next year we'll know if the flashing is a working root barrier or not. Sorry I don't have the results yet.
