This thread and the information and thought that Erica has put into permacultural responses and mitigation of the new normal of wildfires might be numero uno on the western NA continent for an all out commitment to address this recurring nightmare.  As many people in northern California are casting blame and ridicule on PG&E (I'm not defending them) the reality is so much more than a life without power.  With heroic effort by firefighters ongoing, it seems the Kincade Fire might be a dodged bullet as to loss of life and private property compared to 2017.  That's good but WHAT NEXT?  

Erica has many possible avenues of effort that a full on commitment would engage our communities in relationship with the land and life.  Can you imagine the amount of $$s spent on this effort yet again.  It seems a misallocation and lessons not learned to continue as if so called normalcy still engages the bulk of the population.  Collaboration on all levels is called for, giving people responsibility and participation to work with these principles to regain our lost connection to earth.  Lets push these ideas forward and Respond.

How are your hugelkulture beds doing now? I'm in Pacific Grove, and a big fan of permaculture, though no room to grow. Are you finding life sustaining results from your efforts? especially here in this 'not cheap' location?

Just wanted to post here that I have a nice 5 acre parcel on the sunnyside peninsula outside Sandpoint Idaho (northern panhandle) - Lake Pond e Reille. It's a beautiful spot for those who want a northwest/snow climate. The parcel is southeast facing I think with good sunny exposure. Trees abut the road, about a third to half the acreage with mostly very gentle slope meadow down. The area abounds with wildlife, fishing, hunting, lakes, rivers, mountains etc etc. Sandpoint is a well developed forward thinking faction of people and there is permie/sustainable/natural building groups there that are part of the larger NW region. I had visions of a natural path there, but the years have passed and I a central coast Cali woman, and the only one in my family with the dream. I'd love to see it go to someone who can manifest it. After many years of holding it (inherited from my Mom) I'm ready to let it go and listed it ($59,900). Let me know if you are interested and I can send pics. Annie

I'd like to post for all here that I have 5 acres (what I think are truly beautiful northwest acres) outside of Sandpoint Idaho, on the sunnyside peninsula bordering Lake Pond de Reille. My Mom left it to me and I always had dreams of living and making a natural life there, but I'm a central coast Cali woman and the climate a bit much for me. I'd love to see younger, sturdier stock do something wonderful with it. I finally listed it with a realtor this spring at $59,900. It's half trees, half meadow with a east facing exposure I think. My vision was a small homestead, with some animals and herbs, gardens, etc. It's fantastically beautiful country there, huge lake, rivers, hunting, fishing, skiing god's country if you go for that kind of thing. The land is undeveloped, good road, has a power box at roadside, no well, a few neighbors. Northern Idaho has a permie base and is part of greater northwest energy/commitment in this area.
