I've been looking at the pictures of your rocket and I'm interested to know what kind of brick you are using. Is that refractory brick? Also, I have not ever seen anything but a metal chimney type of heat riser assembly. Do you think the square design of yours will have an effect on the reburn within the barrel once you get it finished? I love the idea, it seems like it will last forever, but with the way the smoke circles between the top of the chimney and the barrel, I would assume that a round design would work better.

I'm looking to build one of these in the spring, so please let me know how well your design works! Thanks.

the next step is to insulate the chimney to 1.5 in of the inside diameter of the burn barrel
barrel = 22in
insulated riser will be 18"

kind of putting this aside. its 80 now
but havent totally set it down
i will definitely finish the chimney

the new version of insulation

kinda draggin my feet on the insulated riser
going to line the floor w insul sheets before "massing"

Some water barrior

screened clay

may first cob batch

Then I added straw because I forgot I was going to do an insulative layer first, so it was a thin layer of cob w out straw
then w straw
Next is getting the riser insulated

THe insulation will be 8in by its completion

Hello, i have a 6 in system using a 55 gal barrel being built
I am about to insulate the brick riser
Im thinking of hardware mesh form packed with ash and perlite
Is there a proper ratio?

Any other natural material suggestions for replacng the perlite?

Is the coarseness of the air space between the barrel and insulating jacket going to be an issue?
Does this airpath need to be smooth?
Should i use sheet metal or concrete forms?

Does a concrete form get removed before placing barrel is used?

Good info on compacting materials for mass.
Water to get things arranged makes sense

My curiosity of locking and "play"sands, answered

I'm going to just take my chances and experiment

I found very rich clay patches
I'm going to fine screen the dg for slip

I'll keep updating as I go

Oh and....

I have been looking on line for info

One point of interest is that for patios, contractors add a hardener before compacting
Which is also available in an Eco friendly compound
Keeps it rain resistant

May have application here...

I'm looking for some info on DG as a material, it has both quartz and feldspar, seems to be opposite thermal matials

Good for cob?
Thermal or insulative?

Good for slip when screened down?

In a green house application, where the entire earth floor is natural packed DG, should I insulate at the base of the thermal battery??
Or can I begin the build with the 8 in pipe directly on the ground?
( I imagine I will be using the battery centered in the hoop house as a bed warmer, plants arranged on top, water barrier separated)

I believe I will be using large river rocks, filled in with pea gravel and clay/dg slip as my mass

Considering usage for hundreds of bottle necks
From where verticle stops and begins to taper

Any cool ideas?

Or perhaps another posting location?

i saw this thing online where a guy stuffed a beer bottle with organic matter and innoculated it with mushroom mycelium, fruiting an oyster mushroom from the mouth of the bottle, i thought it was quite cool and hope to eventually replicate it after collecting more coffee grounds from the coffee drinkers in the family

Very cool project
But I prefer suspended columns of inoculated straw
But a fruiting bottle would be a great gift
