Thank you i figured i would need biomass (carbon) to balance the added nitrogen from the pigs.

I though of mulching it before first snow with fallen leaves (ive got massive maple trees (60 feet high and above) and should use them and ask the neighbours for theirs i should be anle to get at least 6 inch of milch everywhere

Ok i may need to clarify myself

First of all last frost was a typo i meant first frost.
We are in Canada near Montreal
I wanted to have the pigs work the aera but they will never come back after i have a dedicated aera for them that i want to do paddocks for rotation.

I though of using:
Buckwheat
Cowpeas
Daikon radishes and mustard

The thing is i dont know if they are all compatible in one cover crop
Also Gabe Brown said we need to think in term of 6 or 7 species for the cover crop which is more than i can handle (design wise)

The aera is an estimated 10 to 15 thousand square feet

Will be sown by hand and can we raked after if needed
If there is lack of info dont hesitate

I will also received my first batch of 50 chickens divided in 2 tractors around end of july but i have other plan for them
They will tractor the aera i want to plant my windbreak in the fall

Soo Hi!

First of all I dont know if im in the right section for that but here we go.

We bougth our little plot of land a year ago and are moving in 20 days. I would like for someone to weight in on my first project. I want to till the aera that I plan to make my garden in next year. I bought my very first pigs and they are coming in on the july 1 and i though they would do the work for me.

Id like to follow up with a good cover crops that could help my soil for next year. Its clearly a clay soil and I didnt get it analise yet.

I figure after pigs I will suffer a bit of a compaction.

Which cover crop would help give
Nitrogen Fixing
Biomass
Compaction

Our last frost is oct 16 im in 5b

Carpentry and underground building are a bit hard just make sure you do calculation properly to make sure you do not get burried alive from something collapsing

(Ive been a professional carpenter for the past 12 years going on 13)

Ive never built something of this magnitude underground but i would find myself a forum//community online of engineer since they love solving problem even if its for free and some get a real kick out of calculating those kind of situation

Wish i could help a bit more

Hi everyone im just putting this here as a blank slate to see what would people do on that land (i am excluding the one year observation for this excercise)

A bit of background info

Surrounded by farming land mainly corn and soy
Clay soil
Zone 5
We are looking to get chickens, a few goats, few pigs (2 or 3 at most) and few rabbits.
Veggie garden and food forest in the process of being design and figured out.

Just to be clear our goal is self sufficency and nothing commercial

Also need to mention i am not looking for someone to design the whole thing but id like to see what people come up with, we already have a vey good idea of what we are doing and where but if i get one or two good ideas out of this post it will be worth it!!

I am getting ready to get some pigs in july and i defenetly want an heritage breed.

So far in canada ive found a few breed around me such as

Large black (i find them a bit large for the space we have)
Tamworth hampshire and berkshire (all roughly 40 mins away)
Gloucestershire Old spots (they are located 6 hours drive away id rather avoid that)

But if i want the american guinea hog i cant find it in any breeder registery in canada and i found a source saying they were praised for their meat curing

If i cant find them i am mostly gonna lean towars tamworth or large black

Anybody knows where i could find them near quebec or ontario
Ive found some in NH but if i could avoid importing livestock in canada it would save me a lot of stress

Thank you in advance

Finally subscribed to permies.com

My wife and I bought a property of roughly 2 acres on the river in rural town around montreal and we are reading and learning as much as we can about permaculture to make it fully sustainable and to help spread the word.

We are moving there in late june and we CANNOT wait to move in and get started

You guys are gonna hear from me a lot from now on
