Have you tried the squash hedge before? If so, did it work to keep the deer out? I think it is a brilliant idea and I'd like to try. My only worry is cross pollinating my precious squashes with hedge squash.

On a different squash note... Perhaps I need to save more seed of my precious strains and manure pile plant my less precious ones for feed?

This is super helpful. Thank you, everyone. I have always been rather boring and put strawberries and pansies or Jonny-jump-ups under my fruit trees. We are on a fresh new piece of land I will be referring back to this post as we set more of our space up. I love this community!

I am so excited to give this a second go around. I have had trouble finding spawn in Canada. I did find one good source for oysters and shitaki. But, I would really like some Portobello. Spores101.com was where I found my Canadian source. They have a small selection of edibles, reasonable prices and fast shipping. Does anyone know of a place in Canada to get some Portobello, or cermini, spawn?

I love fermenting. I would have to say that my two favorite things to ferment are yogurt and dilly carrots. We've been dabbling in ferments for a little over a year. I am very much looking forward to getting started on them again as a weekly practice. We are just getting settled into our new homestead. Our family enjoys dilly carrots fermented much more than regular pickled now. My mom and I can't keep up to all the munching that happens in our homes. I made a little video about how we make them. I'll post it here sometime next week when I finish moving our website over to the new host.
