Ohh I'll have to check about adding that Pacific Waterleaf to this year's growcycle!

Hey all, I'm trying to get more into growing mushrooms on logs but live in Montana where most of the wood is softwood. I wanted to see if anyone has leads/creative ways to get free or cheap hardwood in an area with mostly softwood. I live in town in Missoula and there are quite a few hardwood trees in town but the few felled trees listed on craiglist have all been softwood. Thanks!

Anthony Powell wrote:Many years ago I read an article about an English lady growing clothes from fungi. She'd make a plaster cast of her client and make a positive form from that. She'd apply a nutrient gel to that form, and leave it in her damp cellar to grow fluffy. When ready, she'd strip that off the form, and take it down to her local stream (she lived in a hilly area) and leave it in the water for the water life to finish off the loose organic material for a few days. She could then dry it and supply her customer.
More personal insulation means less building insulation needed!

Insulated mushroom clothes sound amazing!

and I think I've got it hard here in the more mild part of Montana in the teens, thanks for the perspective!

Oh I'm definitely curious about the vegan jerky! I would love to learn more preservation techniques for high calorie vegetarian foods.

Would love to have something like this for the cold Montana winters! Also curious about maintaining cleanliness without chemicals.

I heard there has been some talk within the USDA and FTC about actually trying to fully define "sustainable" for food and other products. It's a word being used a lot in marketing but without definition it can become an empty marketing term. Perhaps incorporating many permaculture principles and practices into this definition could be helpful in making permaculture more attractive to all growers. Certifications like that can come with a whole lot of paperwork, time and extra expense though.
