I forgot to mention a state/province that allows composting toilet, it was not allowed where I was in Quebec few years ago ....this is important for me as I would like to try to save as much water as possible.

I’m from Tahiti and I’ve been dreaming for many years now, to start a small homestead with a forest garden somewhere temperate, with 4 seasons.
Tahiti is great and I love what I can grow here but the small place I have here is full now. I’ve been trying to find a larger place since a year and a half now, but land is really expensive and small so I feel really limited here and have a hard time meeting someone with same interests.
As Tahiti is a small island in the middle of the pacific ocean, my closest options would be New Zealand, Usa or Canada (I would prefer an english speaking country).

But as a french citizen, it seems complicated. So I’m just wondering if some of you have done the move or know about that and could help me with some questions I have.

The little I know is that I can buy a place In Canada or Usa, not sure about New Zealand as a new law has been voted few years ago to not sell to foreigners for good reasons.

So my questions/concerns  would be  :

-How long could I stay on site ? I would probably just have a “visitor visa” to start with, which I believe allows me to stay 3 months in USA and may be 6 months in Canada. I hope I would find a way to extend my stay but for now that is the reality.

- Which states/provinces are the most « homesteading friendly » with little regulations/building codes ?
I would like to be allowed to build a small/tiny house using if possible natural methods and wood, may be few tiny houses later on to get an income from it, catch rain water, raise some animals ( if I find a partner/someone who could stay on site when I have to be out of the country), have the right to be off grid if I want to, have a  »mild » climate (I love snow but not too much or too long ...), a place where locals would be open to have foreigners settling down( I know it really depends on how foreigners behave, like everywhere, but still some regions are more open to that than others).

- Are the taxes the same for non resident ? Or are they higher ? What should I expect, I know it depends a lot on where we live.

- Has anyone done that with children ? Were they allowed to go to school ?
From what I understood, I would have to apply for a student visa for my son.
When we lived in Canada under a « working holiday visa », I had to work full time for him to have the right to attend a public school without any added cost... if not I would have had to pay 1200 canadian dollars per month ...

- Could you please tell me about anything I should consider/think about before buying a place ? I know there is so much to think about but what would you recommend for a future small homesteading place.

I know I might probably sound like a crazy stupid girl, as some would say it is completely unrealistic but I believe in « live your dreams , don’t dream your life » and doing things instead of waiting for them to happen, which would be even more unrealistic in this case ... I have money I could use to buy a place in those countries, some states/provinces have really cheap properties, and I would find a way to generate a passive income over here in Tahiti to allow me building/living the life I’m dreaming of.

I went to help in few places in those countries and I had great experiences in amazing places with beautiful people/mind.
I could go again and help to live the life I’m aiming for, but at the end of the day when I leave I have « nothing left » of my hard work and have to go back to my everyday life in Tahiti which is very different.

I’m 36 years old now, and I believe that it is time for me to start my own.

Than, you , Mareva..I feel very blessed , indeed ..
Thank you for your attention , but I’ll be honest, I’ve given up the type of life ,that facilitates that type of possibility.
Long distance generally requires a lot of money and travel concessions ..I’m not getting vaxxed , nor am I ever letting anyone stick anything up my nose .so that seems beyond a realistic hope

The current trend is , .I’m not even digging coming out of the forest that much 😂

Thank you so much for your reply . I totally understand your position, and you are right long distance means lot of money involved, and now with Covid everything is more complicated... until few weeks ago I didn’t want to get vaccinated or anything, but  for some reasons I had to do it .
Also,  I’m not yet ready to give up the way I would like to live, may be I’ll find with time that it is possible here too... in a different way.

I’m an easy going person who likes simple things and dream of living in a small house surrounded by nature, growing most of my food, tending also as much as possible to a minimalist lifestyle.
I’m looking for a caring and open-minded partner that enjoys making stuff ( wood working, natural building, weaving, cooking,  ...) growing food, playing music, talking, sharing good and simple moments hopefully for the longest !

I like living in Tahiti but I haven’t met anyone yet locally interested by the lifestyle I would like to have so I’m considering living somewhere else.
The fact that you already have a child is not a red flag for me, actually I would prefer someone that already has one as I’m not planning to “carry “ another child. Sorry my first language is french so words I used might not be appropriate, hope you’ll understand.

I don’t smoke anything and drink occasionally  but don’t get drunk as I can’t stand it either.

I would say that I’m an easy going person, I like going on hikes, love singing, and try to learn guitar and ukulele for now.    

I’m looking for a caring and open-minded partner that enjoys making stuff ( wood working, natural building, weaving, cooking, ...), animal care , growing food, playing music, talking (I talk a lot),  sharing good and simple moments hopefully for the longest ! This person has to be tolerant, not judgemental about others.  I don’t smoke and drink occasionally, would prefer a partner that don’t drink too much.
