Sounds like it could make an awesome chick starter feed too ^^

Ooo I’m imagining a swing hanging off that one in a few years ^^
I like the idea
Plus the acorns are edible (could be fed to animals too I believe)

So there’s an old outdoor latrine (read: hole in the ground) left by the previous owners a few meters off the south east side of the house. What’s a good tree to plant in there once we fill it in? For info, semi arid steppe climate (close to the Sahara desert in Algeria), usually doesn’t go below freezing, sandy soil, but could be watered by gray water from the house. Bonus points for  guild ideas in addition.

My first thoughts are non edible, something  useful maybe coppice-able for mulch or rocket stove wood. Forage for bees? Easy on the eyes? A tree wild birds (we’ve seen hoopoes!) love to make their homes in or eat berries off of?

Very interesting discussion.
Came across this video of a company in Kenya doing exactly this. Unfortunately they don’t specify whether they beat treat the worms before feeding them to the chickens :

We’re trying to green our little piece of steppe/desert on the edge of the Sahara in Algeria. Along with leucaena, carob, maybe acacia if I can get them to sprout, I’d like to plant some mesquite trees but don’t have access to the seeds here. Willing to refund mailing costs (PayPal?).

Also have seen the climate referred to as continental Mediterranean. Inland Algeria bordering the Sahara desert

New landowner here, Bsk semi arid steppe sandy soil lots of work to do, just wanted to ask the question, we came across some wild tortoises roaming our land today. What does this mean? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? Useful or pests? The kids are going to be thrilled, and I don’t mind them, but I’d love anybody with experience or knowledge’s expertise on the subject ^^
