sounds like so tree clearing is needed. Clear the spaces you need and any trees that could cause damage to structures but also think about shade and what you can do with the wood. make chips for garden bed use as lumber for structure, dig a hole and use a liner for a man mad pond or slabs for a pathway. if you have wood you have material water storage shelter...alot of options.  also there's nothing to say you cant plant your garden in the woods as long as there enough sun and animals dont need fields to roam that more another random things humans developed for no real purpose like lawns. free shade for the animals and protection from predators is an asset

heya two strategies come to mind, one is grade the area back with a skid steer, then buy coco coir netting the industrial rolls (optional buy useful) and lay these out and secure then we have used wood slabs cut at a diagonal to create stakes then once that out and taunt use a fast growing fescue and compost extract to aid in growth and spray that on for stability that will be last OR create ridge swales like they do for rice fields  and still add in grass seeds with deep roots for stability. you can rent or borrow a skid steer and look up grading its pretty easy to do  

I feel like this is a big part of the homesteader's journey. It IS an uphill battle and constant stressor. Society is geared towards keeping people depleted, dependent, and makes quick payoffs so attractive vs a legacy.  No one think about planting a tree they will never eat the fruits from in their life time but their children or the next generation will feast on.

The thing about it is we will always have stress and problems, but working on this dream of yours will give you the privilege of choosing your own problems vs allowing the world to choose them for you. And also think of the payoff, yes the time energy critical thinking and decisions for years down the road are hard and very grading...but think of yourself at that milestone and look back. What would your future self tell you past  (or current) self? would it be this was a mistake or would it be keep going its worth it.
