Day of Fire

Typical for a bunch of permaculture goofballs, Wheaton Labs has a bunch of half-assed holidays! This year the Day of Fire half-assed holiday is the Thursday after Christmas.  You might still be recovering from your relatives and over stuffing yourself at dinner, but at Wheaton Labs, they are playing with fire!

The Day of Fire is generally celebrated by improving upon all the fire - related stuff at Wheaton Labs (and enjoying it too!).  Some of the things that will be done include:

Building indoor and outdoor firewood racks like this one:

Making sure all rocket stoves have:
        o a kindling cracker
        o a poker
        o an ash bucket
o ample fire starting paper and a propane torch
        o a nearby fire extinguisher
o good firebricks for the wood feed

Find quick and easy ways to upgrade rocket mass heaters

Making improvements to the bun warmer space

An evening with the bun warmer
o plus a tiny camp fire in the middle (with our little camp fire contraption)
       o s'mores
       o hot dogs
o hot drinks (tea, spiced cider, etc.)

Last year the Day of Fire was held on November 26th. Here's some pics from Will's Bootcamp Experience of it.

From Dez:

Magdalene Bootcamp 'Day of Fire':

I wonder what this year's Day of Fire will bring?

Stephen shares the  Day of Fire celebration:

Much of the afternoon was spent doing heating-related maintenance and tweaks along with some more event prep. However, we also cleaned-up and fired-up the Bun Warmer, a Rocket Heater whose exhaust doubles as a sturdy bench, found out in one of the Berm Shed cells next to the Classroom. We hung out and ate fire-cooked snacks and brats.

The gang's all here... Daniel, Grey, Paul, Caleb, SEPPer Julia.

I child proofed my house but they still get in. Distract them with this tiny ad:
Switching from electric heat to a rocket mass heater reduces your carbon footprint as much as parking 7 cars
