This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEP curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the wood badge in tool care.

Tools are much more useful if they have handles.  Handles occasionally break and need to be replaced.  Let's learn how to make a handle! To get more practice making handles, you'll be making three handles for this BB in the wood badge.

Tools handles that qualify for this BB are:
 - axe
 - hatchet
 - maul
 - sledge
 - hammer
 - pick
 - pickaxe
 - pulaski
 - fokken hoe

Split wood is generally better stock to use for handles but store-bought will work if you watch the grain (as mentioned in this video):

To get certified for this BB, post three pics for each of your three handles:

  - pic of tool with missing/broken/inadequate handle
  - pic of new handle under construction
  - pic of tool with new handle installed

A lot of people cry when they cut onions. The trick is not to form an emotional bond. This tiny ad told me:
