This is a badge bit (
BB) that is part of the
PEM curriculum. Completing this BB is part of getting the
straw badge in
Building.
While building a house may be out of reach at the moment, let's get some practice putting together smaller structures. Making a "ladder stand" and leaning it against a tree is a great way to get up above the brush and see
deer further out while deer hunting. Sure you could buy one but let's practice building something that we'll be able to enjoy with our butts!
Here are some pictures of what we're after:
Minimum requirements:
- Ladder and seat/platform are all one unit
- Platform for your feet is at least 12' off the ground
- Bracing to keep it from wobbling
- System to connect it to the tree (ratchet strap, etc)
- As in all Building BBs, no pressure treated
wood allowed
- 90% natural materials by weight (plywood isn't natural)
- Metal braces can be used if you make them yourself
- Clearly sturdy
enough for uncle Frank to use it (250 lbs)
Provide proof of the following as pictures or
video (<2 min):
- Wood you're using
- Ladder stand midway through construction
- Finished ladder-style deer stand
- Finished stand connected to a tree for use
- Close-up images to show it can support uncle Frank
- If the unnatural materials you used are anywhere near 10% of the build, explain why you fall within the 90% natural requirement
