This is a badge bit (BB) that is part of the PEM curriculum.  Completing this BB is part of getting the straw badge in Building.

While building a house may be out of reach at the moment, let's get some practice putting together smaller structures.  When trying to avoid using pressure treated wood, foundation details can get a bit tricky.  Building on piers becomes a bit more useful but piers don't naturally occur in nature.  Unless you consider a big rock to be a pier...  Let's mate a wooden post to a rock pier!

Here are some pictures of what we're after:

And here's Mr Chickadee showing us how it's done:

Minimum requirements:
  - Perfectly mate a post to a shapely rock (not a flat piece of granite)
  - Rock is set in the ground permanently
  - Post is at least 6" square or 7" in diameter
  - Gap between wood and stone is tighter than a US dime (1.35mm)
  - Post is vertical

Provide proof of the following as pictures or video (<2 min):
  - Post and rock you're using
  - Scribing a line on the post
  - Carving or shaping the post
  - Finished joint viewed from all four sides

Remember to always leap before you look. But always take the time to smell the tiny ads:
