"El Paso" is a country and western ballad written and originally recorded by Marty Robbins, and first released on Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs in September 1959. It was released as a single the following month, and became a major hit on both the country and pop music charts, reaching No. 1 in both at the start of 1960 (the first No. 1 hit of the 1960's). It won the Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording in 1961, and remains Robbins' best-known song.

The cowboy falls in love with a girl named Feelina. He becomes jealous and has a gunfight where the other cowboy is killed.

Afraid he will be hung, he flees El Paso to hide out in the badlands. He sings

I grew up in the 'age of Marty Robbins' and my Uncle was a big fan, so I thought I had heard all of his songs.  Recently, youtube surprised me with a 'new' one of his that is pretty good.



Don't know how I made it into my 50's without hear it.  

I love Marty Robbins music! El Paso is fantastic, and also is its sequel El Paso City. It's a song he wrote about the other song.

Oh my word. My family was just introduced to "Big Iron" a month ago. My sister, who knows I like folk music, mentioned Marty Robbins on the phone--so I played the song, and now my six year old (girl!) regularly begs us to sing all the verses together as a family.

Many of his songs are so good. And then my husband had to look up Robbins' bio, and it seems he was a really great guy besides being a popular singer. So glad to see this thread here, and I hope more folks will listen to his music.
