Greetings All!

My homestead, "Stone Baerm Permaculture Homestead" is located in Renfrew County, Ont, Canada.
We are zone 4b (most of the time).
You can reference Cam's 2021 time with us in the "Stone Baerm Adventures" thread here on Permies.

For 2022, we are looking for 2 additional persons to join our permanent crew of 4 in the building of a Cold Climate Passive Solar Greenhouse with Earth Battery.
If anyone has a better way to format the title,...please do so.

We will brake ground as soon a weather permits.  The goal is to have the structure "weather tight" by Fall.
Our objective is to create a zone 8 micro climate that could provide year round cultivation in mild winters, and a minimum of 9 months cultivation during harsh winters.

We are installing an Earth Battery, that will include a passive solar air heater, and a passive solar water heater into the system.
Our thermal mass/walls are of stone, + daub, + lime mortar, and counter sunk, not quite a Walipini but close.
The greenhouse will be of Post & Beam and/ or Timber Frame construction, either way the lumber is to be milled on site.  The boys are selecting trees to girdle at present.
Glazing is of 16 mm polycarbonate.
We will be incorporating venting, duct fans, thermal blankets, solar panels, rain water collection systems, earth tubes, etc.,.

If you have an interest in any one, or all of these sustainable methods/systems, we invite you to join us.
This is not a payed offer, but we can put you up, as well as feed you.
If your "Creature Comforts" exceed the basics, then you can pay me.
If you are looking for a documented Apprenticeship/internship set up, I can accommodate as I am PDC PRI Certified, although a negotiated investment is required.

For more info/details PM me through this site, followed with email communication for serious inquiries only.

Cheers!  K

Kate, this sounds like a great position for two lucky people who will get to learn to build a passive solar greenhouse.

I image that once they finish with your build they will be ready to go home and build their own.

What a wonderful opportunity.

Hi Anne.

Thanks for your input, we are very exited that we can put this build into action after 3 years of planning resources.

Glad to see someone "re-formatted" the original title of the post.

Cheers!  K

Hi Kate,
I'm not looking for a placement but if you do a work bee sometime this year let me know. I'm a journeyman carpenter that designed and installed solar for 3 years and like all passive solar tech. I would gladly swing a hammer from time to time if our schedules allign. I'm near tweed...
Cheers,. David

Build up date

*  Earth battery materials have arrived.
*  Glazing is expected to arrive any day now.

Thus far;

*  A couple of locals have offered their skills to the build.
*  One offer from further afield.
*  Two full-time spaces still available.

Cheers!  K

So nice to hear from you Cam.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Definitely will have pics to post about this project with a "New to me" Nikon 35mm digital camera, and multiple I phones floating about.

Cheers!  K

Hi All!

I would like to introduce Austin, Maya, and pet Pepper, new members on the Homestead.
Here is a pic of their Yurt, still not completely set up, just waiting on better weather.

Homestead Update;

Our homestead addition of a couple of "Yurt People" ended 6 months ago,...Some folks just aren't cut out for homesteading (to put it mildly), and 6 months to mend, repair, and clean up the alterations of their stay here.

I need a break from Suburbanites!

Note to Cam

Peaches is a definite keeper, she's wonderful;  mannerly and gentle.
Might breed her in the Spring, see what she throws.

Hate so say it but I judged those two yurt books by their cover and I was thinking they'd be a let down. Did you end up making your greenhouse?

The greenhouse build continues on, at a slower pace to be sure, so be it!
