Can I sow daikon seeds directly in grass?

I have a large grassy field that I would like to prepare for gardening next spring… I would like to start by using daikon radishes as a cover crop to outcompete the grass and till the field somewhat, allowing them to rot in the ground over winter…would this work?
(I have very little hands on experience in gardening, mostly just reading, videos, etc, the theoretical part)

Hi Julie.  I tried that once here in northeast Ohio and only a couple grew.  It was wet when I did it, but they seem to want to be just a little burried in the ground to sprout properly.  There may be different types that do better than what I tried.

Most seeds need good soil contact in order to grow.

Like Christopher said a few might just happen to fall through the grass and sprout.

Most folks start by covering with cardboard and a thick layer of wood chips.

I have not grown daikon radishes though I am not sure they will outcompete the grass and/or have time to rot over winter.

If I were doing that, I'd make up a zillion tiny little seed-balls with the daikon and whatever else, probably clover and a couple other things. Then I'd broadcast those semi-evenly and mow the field as short as I could, and just see what comes up.

Last spring I planted some in a tilled bed and also broadcast some on unbroken, mowed lawn hoping some would sprout and could be harvested even while still small before the spring warmed up too much. Not a single one sprouted in the grass. They sat there all spring and summer long and then in the fall when it got cooler many of them sprouted and happily grew almost all winter until a hard freeze came. Though, it would not have been enough to choke out other plants.
