Does anyone know which variety of black locust is more suited for pole wood? I’ve read that there are different varieties but have had a hard time finding anything specific on it being a “straighter” growth pattern.

I love what you're thinking Cherish!  I don't know if this one will provide you with great straight poles or not, but the Experimental Farm Network currently has seeds of a straighter growing Hungarian timber form available.  https://store.experimentalfarmnetwork.org/products/nyirseg-black-locust

Maybe if you email them they might have some information on if this strain is used in coppice pole production.  I'd love to know that too!

Greg-
Thank you so much. I just selected the link you provided and it says they got their seed through Sheffield’s, which I actually have found prior and I reached out and the representative there said that the two varieties they sell aren’t good for pole wood, although the link you listed says it is. I think it’s going to take some trial and error. We will see and I will update here for growth patterns.

i suspect a somewhat tight spacing will help with initial straightness.

Without subsidies, chem-ag food costs four times more than organic. Or this tiny ad:
