So weird, I was looking over my 14" raised beds and next to one of my tomato plants was a hole dug about 6 inches deep, and filled with grass!

I saw a couple small rabbits in my yard tonight as well.

Do rabbits build nests like this in garden beds?  A shallow hole filled with grass?  So weird.

EDIT: Just looked at other corner of raised bed and another similar hole was dug with a little bit of grass in it.  I saw two rabbits in the back yard.. I'm guessing it was these two that were messing with my garden!

Sounds to me like you have a couple of rabbits that are getting ready to have babies!

Those holes you described are just like the ones I have found except mine had the babies in them.

Now I feel bad about pulling out the grass, filling with dirt and watering down.

Don't feel too bad, I'm guessing they'll crank out a new hole (hopefully in a better location) pretty quickly.

Mamas build discrete burrows for their litters and stuff the exits when they leave.  Usually this entails collapsing the burrow deeper inside, then stuffing the entrance with grass.  This keeps the kits from wandering out, and also stifles their nosies and smells.  A predator (or curious human) unplugs the grass and finds only a shallow dead-end hole.  But that's because mama collapsed the tunnel.  She re-digs it every time she nurses, which is usually once a day.

Your tomatoes might be doomed once those babies come out of hiding...  Rabbits aren't much for eating the roots out from under plants like gophers are, but they will probably mow your plants down like a beaver mowing saplings.

rabbits indeed dig burrows, but the nest you describe is probably from a hare. they only dig a shallow hole as a nest.

Another hole dug into a different raised bed last night, about 10 inches deep and filled with grass.  No babies in it.  I did see a rabbit in the yard at night again the night before last.. dog chased it out of yard.. it made it through the fence.  I guess I need to go around the yard and replace any bad pickets.

Dang rabbit dug a hole in the corner where a zucchini plant was, destroying it.  It was a seedling a few inches tall.  Makes me mad as it took a month to grow that big.  I removed the grass and filled the hole back up with dirt.

I also inter-cropped a few more zucchini just in case I need to transplant.
