Hello! I'd like to replace my old stove with a thermal mass rocket stove. I'm trying to learn the skills on my own but am nervous about completing it 100%. I think I could get close but would really like someone to help make it with me so I have the momentum I need to get it done before winter.

I would appreciate any recommendations for where I can find such help. I've been studying alot around the Permies site but IDK how much I truly know yet.

Feel free to message me on my email finoftheinfinite@gmail.com or 218 481 4057.. I'm in Bruno MN.

Hi Jeff,   Lots of help available in many formats at your fingertips to assist you on your journey to build your very own RMH (Rocket Mass Heater):
1) Here on Permies! Cruising through the RMH forums here will give you lots of build documentaries and pictures that should be a great start. Once you know a bit more of what your looking for then you can ask more specific questions.
2) Get a copy of the Rocket Mass Heater Builders Guide by Ernie & Erica Wisner and / or Rocket Mass Heaters: Superefficient Woodstoves YOU Can Build by Ianto Evans and Leslie Jackson
Going and building one in your back yard however will probably the best way to learn first hand. Very cheap, simple and quick to get something up and running which will teach you a lot.
Good luck and don’t be afraid to experiment.
After all, it’s rocket science!

Hi, Jeff

Gerry has given you some great advice.

I saw this thread and thought maybe this is exactly what you are wanting to do, if not it might be interesting to others:

Hi Jeff;
What style RMH were you hoping to build? A  "J tube" ?
If so you can do this yourself with a bit of guidance from the rocket scientists here at Permies.
If your wanting to build a batchbox  then there is some metal fabrication needed, OR you could buy those pieces premade from dragon technology...

An old school RMH  was a "J tube" 6" or 8"  and it used stove pipe to heat your rock and cob mass.
A modern day J tube can use pipes thru a mass or it can use a brick bell as a mass.

If your worried about making cob,   Don't be, it is simple simple and  if you build with bricks you will not use much cob at all.

Let us know more about your wishes and plans and we will try to guide you to your first successful RMH build.

One thing to remember is when you build with cob everything can be disassembled and redone quickly and simply.

Hi Permies,
I'm also looking for someone to first of all advise if it is possible to build a rocket mass heating system in place of the fireplace/woodstove on the hearth system that I have. I'm not capable of doing the build alone but would be open to helpful ideas in finding someone who has building skills that I could hire. I'm retired and still active and willing to do the prep work and assist in any way possible. Is there anyone near the northern california area who is available and willing to look at the project possiblilty? Thank you

Always! Wait. Never. Shut up. Look at this tiny ad.
