During the month of September, I am a Sepper at Wheaton Labs renting a Wofati named Dogstar Cabin.  I would like to post as many small permaculture innovations as I can during this time.  If I can get one per day that would be ideal, but it will probably end up closer to three or four per week.  Each thread will be in its appropriate forum, and this thread will primarily be used as an index and a spot for commentary on how well each thing worked out.  Sorry if any of these gadgets or techniques are repeats of something already in permie-space or the internet at large, I'm not researching prior at all.

Failure day

Well... I have been trying to get one done per day and the things I tried today just didn't quite work out.  Low as they may be, I do have some standards as to what qualifies as post-able and these projects don't yet meet that bar.

I was trying to make a slick second burner to cook on out of tin cans.  My main burner is a tiny camping gasifier stove that has been amazing, I think the brand name is burned off but maybe you can do a reverse image search or something.  It is one of the kinds where the wood gas re-enters the burn chamber at the top get a cleaner and more efficient burn.  A handful of pistachio shells is enough fuel to quickly boil a quart of water; for one person camping I think it is the most fuel-efficient design out there.  The only issue is that it is sort of a batch-fuel system and after feeding in too much wood it starts to burn less and less well.  This makes it bad for doing things like frying potatoes and onions, or any extended cooking.

The second burner was going to be rocket-y in that it had a J-tube and was vertically, continuously fed stick fuel so it can keep cooking for a long time.  It came out... OK and I've used it to cook on twice now, but it needs a lot of refinement and I ran out of tin cans of the right sizes to make another revision.  Right now it reverse-chimneys too easily, I don't like the flame spreader at the top, and it is too hard to cut and assemble so it isn't that useful to others.  I've made enough mediocre tin can stoves in the past to say that this version doesn't qualify as an 'innovation', but hopefully I'll have a much better version done in the next couple weeks.

One of the other projects is going to be really cool though, just gonna take some time.

Off to eat more canned goods and/or raid the Wheaton Labs recycling pile.

Vent pipe repair

Again, I didn't get anything made today that is worth its own post, but I made progress on a few for upcoming posts.  I kept meaning to get around to realigning the ground vent pipe at the back of Dogstar and today I finally did.

A lot of earth-sheltered houses use a pipe like this passing through the ground and coming out on the shady side as a cool air inlet.  They are angled slightly upward toward the house for drainage, usually can be sealed off on the inside to contain heat, and screened off for critters.  As the dirt settled around this one, the pipe dropped and the feedthrough at the inside of the house was no longer aligned.  I considered initially excavating the pipe and packing/tamping gravel down underneath it, but the risk of damaging the plastic water-barrier was too high and it turned out there was a much simpler fix anyway.

The pipe had sunk by almost exactly one board width below the feedthrough, and simply swapping the two boards would put it in good alignment, make a difficult circular cut unnecessary, and remove the need to plug the previous round hole.  The only saw I had that wouldn't puncture the plastic behind the wall was the one on my multitool... so it was slow going.  The boards each had one long screw holding them to the posts from the outside, so they took some prying and persuading but it wasn't too bad.  The screws did have to be hammered straight again for reuse though.

Screens needed to be installed on both the inside and outside openings of the pipe as well.  There was a torn window screen in the boneyard that I cut into smaller pieces and that worked out great.  I drilled some small holes in the pipe, about a half inch back from the end to thread baling wire though and secure the screens in place.

The boards are currently just sitting without fasteners right now.  A small cavity between the boards and the waterproofing layer opened up as the ground settled, so I would like to fill that in with cob before securing everything.  I then need to grab a nice-looking trim/support piece to cover the cuts in the board, maybe it can double as a mount for the stove flashing that normally lives there.

The ventilation was immediately much better through the building, I wish I hadn't procrastinated on this project for so long!
