Right now we have ripe strawberries, raspberries, josta berries
currants, and blueberries. I have to say my favorite berries at the moment are my goumi berries. (When the gooseberries ripen in the next week, they will probably take over first place.)

I like their sweetness and tartness of the berry and the nuttiness of the seed.

This is about year number 4 since we planted the bush and definitely the most productive year so far.. We had a dish of them on the table with dinner tonight, complements of my kids.

Our goumi bush has been delightful in how easy and carefree it's been to grow. I kinda watered it the first two years and since then it has done fine even during months of drought.

The plants around it (some pears, apples, and currants) all are fighting some kind of fungal infection the last two years but no signs of it on the goumi.

Also no pests seem to bother it and the birds either don't like them or prefer to eat the other berries in the yard... or maybe they just haven't yet figured out how tasty they are.

I read in a book once, don't remember what book, that you can either spend all your time and money and energy trying to grow the common fruits in the grocery store with all their common pests and diseases, or you can plant uncommon berries that will pretty much flourish with minimal care. Our goumi bush seems to prove that conjecture.
