When my youngest used to get the occasional earache, I used to crush a clove of garlic, let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes, then warm it in a pan with about 1/4C extra virgin olive oil. Strain out the chunk of garlic, have her lie down with the offending ear facing up, fill the ear with the oil, and apply a rice bag (for ears, I made one by simply filling an old, clean baby sock with rice and tying it closed with cotton kitchen twine), warmed as much as she could stand it. Usually, it was 'all better' by the time the heat was gone from the rice bag.
Now, I'd use either mullein or garlic, whichever I have on hand, or both, if possible.
