I’m looking into various ways I might get into a passive
solar - thermal mass home (New Mexico or Colorado) in an affordable way. I have a disability that would prevent me from doing heavy DIY such as ramming earth into tires but I would definitely want to borrow several ideas from the good folks making Earth Ships.
Anyway, as I’ve been looking into different ways to make structures I was wondering if it would be possible to use hempcrete to insulate the inside of a quonset hut without having to do an extensive framework to support it? Would the steel prevent the hempcrete from breathing? I see some people going to so much effort to frame the interiors if quonsets that they use as much material as a stick built house. I love the simple and elegant steel arch and would like to find a way to insulate it without taking away from the simplicity.
Similar question about A-frames. With a wooden frame, would hempcrete be able to support itself long
enough to cure without falling off a wall leaning to one side?
Quonsets and A-frames seem to be fairly budget friendly ways to achieve a livable space. Hempcrete seems to have a lot of the qualities I’m looking for and looks like it would be easier to work with, even with my limitations, than other materials I’ve looked into. Hopefully someone can tell me if what I’m suggesting is possible…or would that break the law of gravity?
Thanks in advance for any advice about this.
