Selling scoby?

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I have bought a scoby some weeks ago, now there are several and getting more and more. There are only so many people wanting scoby.
Now I have the idea to sell the surplus online. Apart from some other questions like packaging the most important thing is, do you need an insurance?
Are there regulations? Only the fact that I bought an "unregulated" scoby does not mean that they won't come after me.
We are in Australia. Scoby is something which produces food. I don't expect to sell a lot and an insurance would be expensive I guess.
I could imagine to donate 20% of the sales price to an organization, BUT I would have to tell on the website how much I did transfer. If you sell only 10 cultures a year that is rather embarrassing.

I give all of my extra's away to try to spread the word about kombucha. As far as I know in the US scoby's are unregulated. I would say that the most important thing is to be sure that you don't infect your scoby's with anything that will make someone sick.

Thanks for the answer! You can only give so many scobys away. Sure you would be very clean but what does it help? Someone gets an unrelated tummy ache or even dies then they come and sue you. That is the main problem of cottage industries today!

Thats true, but most people won't go to that extreme. You can't let fear hold you back from doing what you want to do. I've been selling kombucha at a local farmer's market now for a couple months and havr had no problem. just be sure that you are not at fault and nothing bad can happen.
This will take every ounce of my mental strength! All for a tiny ad:
