looking at this thing and it has a (fresh air intake? I can't tell what it's supposed to do, really) running along the back. If I tried to put an insulated riser instead of the pipe that's there, and then bring a barrel down over that (trying to make it a rocket style arrangement) then it would mean covering most/all of that or/and having the barrel off center so it would be probably almost snugged up to the riser on the back and only allow the smoke/gas to spill down the front and sides.
Would this still function? I don't want to spend hours making a mess setting something up & just have to dismantle it IF someone has already tried it and knows. I'm just wondering if it would mess up the draft too much so that it wouldn't draft as much as it needs to for a clean flame. I can't haul the thing outside to try this.
The flue would then probably just have to go back up and out the chimney but could wrap part of it in brick or something to try to absorb whatever radiant heat on the way out. What would happen if it doubled back and sat on the top of the barrel and then went on its way? Would that diminish the effectiveness of the barrel to have something taking the heat rather than having it just exposed to the air? and if so..a lot or a little?
Don't think the floor would take a full
cob Rocket stove. Or even a portable one filled with rocks instead of mud (sorry, cob)
