Sometimes when I hang out on permies too long, or watch youtube videos of homesteaders willing to drive halfway across the country to help someone they barely know, or see a thousand people donate money to help a virtual friend conquer a mold problem, I'm filled with hope. Maybe, just maybe, the word about permaculture world domination is actually getting out! Maybe the bonds of community are spilling over into the real world! Maybe we can save the earth!

But then, I get behind someone in the grocery store checkout line and look in their cart, then look at random people around me. Or I watch tv or I look  at my own little messy garden. That's when I'm jolted back to reality. What I'm doing in my own backyard is such a tiny drop in the bucket. How could it possibly matter?

But then! I'm at my mother's and she's reading a gardening magazine and says, 'isn't this grave looking thing, this hugelkulture, kind of like the one you made?' I grab the magazine and instantly recognize the hugelkulture image. It's from permies! And I'm filled with hope again and I remember that what we do on a personal level in our own backyards really does matter.

I don't know if Paul Wheaton even reads these forums, but here's what I'd say to him, and to everyone else: Keep working on solutions. Don't be discouraged. Thank you for trying to get the word out even when you think no one is listening because, look! People are listening! The word is getting out!

I suspect the author of this article, Jennifer White Estes, is a permies groupie in her own right.
