A while back on a hike near our house I noticed a big butternut (Juglans cinerea) with lots of nuts on the ground. A few weeks later I noticed they were all stacked against the tree. I am not sure if it had been stacked there by squirrels or kids, but I thought it was cool.
Life happens and I didn’t get time to harvest any for planting. Perhaps next year.
Busy squirrel, those nuts would be nice to plant a few of too.
We have a fox squirrel that just about has his home filled to overflowing with acorns and hickory nuts already and he just started gathering two days ago.
His home is hole in one of our white oak trees that has been home to several different creatures over the years including a big head lizard.
No one seems to stick around for more than a year though, probably because the tree is very near our driveway.

I think I would have felt compelled to pick up a few and pocket them to throw them in one of my nurseries later on, lol.
I was putting some last minute plants in a newer nursery (which is a large bed of wood chips)on our property yesterday and I found several oak nuts. The interesting thing is that we don't actually have any oak trees on our property. They must have come from a neighbor. I planted a few. We'll see what, if anything, will become of them.

Squirrels do carry the acorns around, but blue jays will apparently also stash them away. I know that they go crazy for the acorns and will pick them off the tree before they even start dropping.
