So it is a kind of evaporative cooler, basically.

Which means it works great in dry areas but humid places it is not helpful.

That is correct, in some applications of homes a central courtyard has water ponds
and as air is drawn into the house from the courtyards, it carries moisture which moves
through the whole house or the parts designed to have air flow and exits out the tower.

They have to technology to capture water from air as well, but thats another story.
