email notification

I think I have about six hours invested in trying to get this to work.

So, in your profile, under "notifications and email" there is a checkbox for "Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic."

If you have never fiddled with that, then the behavior will be as if you have checked it.

Please let me know if I screwed something up!

When I started getting email notifications, I went to my preference and turned it off, but they're still coming.

This is something where I thought it would take me five minutes.  And then when that didn't work, it looked like another ten minutes.  And then when that didn't work, I thought it would be another ten minutes .... and so on and so on ... 

When I finally got to the point where I could see how to fix it I thought about how people would experience the exact problem you are talking about. 

I need to go make the appropriate change to that part next. 

For now ...  I haven't tried this, so this is just based on my understanding of how the innards of this forum software works ...  if you go and turn it on, and then turn it off, that should turn it off. 

Please let me know if this does the trick.

Nothing seems to be turning it off for me.

I turned it back on as you suggested, and left it on last night. Today I had some notifications, so I deleted them, went back to my profile and turned it off, and restarted the computer, and still got some notifications.

Did I miss something?

So, first .... keep it turned off. 

Second, when you have it on, it marks certain threads as "this is a thread I am interested in - please tell me if there are ever any updates."  So you have some threads now marked for notifications.

Look at the page that has the notification checkbox.  Below that you should see what notifications you currently have turned on ...
