Never sure what to plant in a forest garden.

Ive got a mixed forest with pine, oak, hickory, cedar and sycamore. In the understory there’s a lot of ferns and black cohosh. I’ve introduced shiitake logs and hops along the edge but that’s it, at least from my limited knowledge. I’ve looked into growing other things out of curiosity but never seriously considered it. Now that I’ve been retired for five whole days maybe it’s time! Any help is appreciated because I’m starting with little knowledge of the matter.

How much sun do you have?  Planting on the drip lines of the big trees possible?

It’s pretty dense cover eight months of the year. The pine grove is year round shade and is where I have the shiitake. Ferns ARE the understory, there’s nothing else until you get the the creek. The creek banks are where the black cohosh lives. I guess if there was a winter planting option then the rest of it would be ok. It gets dappled sun in the off season.
