Can anyone tell me if the book Perennial Vegetables by Eric Toensmeier covers species that are appropriate for zone 9? I see that he has included over 100 species, which doesn't sound like very many when you consider all the USDA Hardiness zones in the U.S.

Have you looked at the Perennial Vegetables website? It lists perennial vegetables for a lot of different climates, including some warm (or hot!) climates: http://perennialvegetables.org/perennial-vegetables-for-each-climate-type/

Thanks Tyler. I had no idea there were so many. I'm starting to think we may be able to grow almost everything we need to consume, all as perennials. Amazing.

Tyler - that is a GREAT link! And I see ramps on my list - I must find them as I think I have the perfect spot to grow them. I will stink to high heaven if I eat them but there's not much better than a cast iron skillet full of potatoes, bacon and ramps. Add some cornbread and the day is made.

I've had trouble finding sources for a number of the plants which are rare in the US, or for some there may be only one vendor.
